Buenos Aires military dictatorship banned this book two years after it was published and one after it won an international prize. Dictatorship argued that "this story to the public with an aim of indoctrination that is preparatory to the task of capturing ideological subversive activities." It was only published again in Argentina in 1984, with the return of democracy. An Elephant Takes Up Much Space consists of 15 beautiful stories about freedom, imagination, the beauty and power of the word, about love and heartbreak and how our best intentions can be misinterpreted. In the story which gives its name to the volume, we see the animals in a circus, led by Victor, the elephant, rebel against the owner and thus manage to recover without long-awaited freedom.
