Rafael Pombo fue un hombre apasionado pero no con la guerra ni con la política, como muchos hombres de su época, sino con la vida, el arte y la cultura. Pudo haber sido un diplomático o un profesor de matemáticas, como le tocó serlo recién graduado de una carrera que le había sido impuesta: la ingeniería. Los mandatos de su padre le sembraron cierta inseguridad que terminó siendo provechosa: la incertidumbre, el cuestionamiento permanente frente a lo injusto, la defensa por la causa de los más débiles, lo hicieron sanamente rebelde.
