Fidel Castro led a group of young Cubans in attacking the Moncada military barracks on July 26, 1953, to initiate a popular uprising. The rebellion was brutally suppressed and Fidel was captured and sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment, during which he was barred from holding public office. Within six years, he had overthrown the dictatorship and Fidel became Prime Minister
