9789629963538: The Psychology of the Chinese People

Synopsis

The Chinese people constitute more than a quarter of the world's population, yet until now there has been no single volume that summarizes and integrates the wealth of data available, in English and Chinese, on the psychological functioning of Chinese people. The Psychology of the Chinese People emphasizes the prime areas of research, both past and present, the theoretical models used to integrate these findings, and areas for future research. The book also provides a cross-cultural comparative perspective on the data. The authors are all scholars who are major contributors to the theoretical and factual basis of their disciplines. The topics covered include socialization, perception, cognition, personality, psychopathology, social behavior, and organization.

Review

"As a source of psychological information of the world's most populous culture, this volume is an important milestone. Jam-packed with information, rich in explanations and testable hypotheses, this book will serve as a guide for contributions to and consumers of psychological research on Chinese culture for years to come." --CUHK Educational Journal

"In this slender treatise on the Chinese character, [Bond] combines his Asian background with his expertise in psychology, and the result is a polished gem. Bond manages to pack so much information into this compact book, with such a readable cadence and vivid style, that its size often seems just right." --Contemporary Psychology

"Broadly speaking, the authors of this volume represent three types of effort: (1) depicting the process of socialization of Chinese; (2) exploring the psychological meaning underlying the behavior of ordinary Chinese people which make up the bulk of the studies; and (3) interpreting indigenous concepts from indigenous viewpoints. . .Along with examining the literature regarding particular variables in multicultural contexts, this volume does move us all closer to the kind of synthesis we hope will emerge in the future."--International Group of Tensions
