The "Ars Hungarica" series is designed to present Hungarian architectural monuments of the great European styles. In this volume Rozsa Feuer-Toth, a well-known scholar of the subject, describes outstanding examples of Renaissance architecture in Hungary. Renaissance is just about the only style which reached Hungary immediately after its emergence. The palaces of Buda and Visegrad were established by a great patron of the arts, Mattias Corvinus, King of Hungary (1458-1490). They astonished even those of his contemporaries familiar with the creations of the Renaissance in Italy. Feuer-Toth presents the techniques and practice of Renaissance architecture, the activities of outstanding foreign and native craftsmen, and with the help of copious illustrations, the monuments themselves, some of which have survived only in fragments.
