Out of the haze of the Borzsony mountains to the north of Budapest flows the great river Danube, dividing the capital of Hungary into two Buda and Pest. Each its own city until officially unified in 1872, both Buda and Pest retain their distinct flavor even today. Pest, with its location on the expansive Hungarian plain, is a bustling cosmopolitan city while Buda, with its hill rising away from the Danube, made an attractive place for Kings' residence, creating a more stately character.
