In August of 1654, a few Ashkenazic Jews arrived in the Dutch colonial settlement of New Amsterdam (later renamed New York), and thus began the astonishing phenomenon of American Jewry. In this stunning book of narrative and photographs, Dr. Saul Landa gives us a glimpse of its beauty. This book is the culmination of a four-year odyssey, visiting eighteen communities, traveling tens of thousands of miles, taking thousands of photographs, reviewing thousands of archival images, and surviving the trauma of one car accident and one traffic violation.

He has been Associate Clinical Professor in Dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine since 1998, and is Chief of Cosmetic Dentistry and lecturer at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey. He is also a photojournalist for the Jewish State newspaper and maintains the stock photo company Judaic Images.
Review:
A Timeless People is a lavishly illustrated, handsome volume which captures the enduring spirit of Jewish continuity against the backdrop of the American landscape. Through lively prose and evocative photographs, Saul Landa s journey through eighteen American cities demonstrates that Jewish life and traditions have indeed remained vibrant for over 350 years well into the twenty-first century. --Dr. Jeanne Abrams, Director, Beck Archives and Rocky Mountain Jewish Historical Society, University of Denver

Dr. Landa brings together the past and present of vibrant Jewish communities in an effort to inspire us about the yet-to-be-written future. The opportunity to learn about the effort, hardships and accomplishments of our Jewish brothers and sisters in creating Jewish communities in this country is truly enlightening. This book is an integral piece of Jewish communal education. --Rabbi Shmuel Silber, Suburban Orthodox Synagogue, Baltimore, Maryland

While most American Jewish history books examine the overall development of the Jewish community by historical periods, Dr. Landa traces the development of eighteen individual Jewish cities throughout the US from their inception to the present. Using numerous photos with concise, significant comments, he has presented a very readable, entertaining and enlightening overview of American Jewry in the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. --Donald Makovsky, Historian, instructor and lecturer on Jewish history, St. Louis, Missouri
