"Medieval English Jews and Royal Officials reflects the daily activities of both the English government and the last generation of English Jews before the expulsion of 1290. It reveals the activities of well-known Jews, such as Master Moses of London and his family, as well as those so poor they could not pay their taxes. It shows the severe measures employed by the crown such as the imprisonment of their children - to force Jews to pay taxes. Questionable practices (such as forging debt-bonds or defrauding Christian merchants) are alleged against Jews, and there are frequent references to the (trumped-up) charges of coinage violations made up against Jews in the late 1720s that led to the execution of nearly 300 Jews. This book tells how the justices of the Jews came to the home of Master Elias, son of the Master Moses of London, bearing their records in order to make changes to them there, and gives details of corrupt practices attributed to some justices of the Jews. After the expulsion, it reports carefully on the profits derived from the sale of the Jews' houses and of the personal effects of Norfolk Jews who, sailing into exile in 1290, were robbed and murdered.
