Palchan's guide is divided into practical, digestible sections. Beginners can learn about the Hebrew alphabet,pronunciation, grammatical structure and punctuation. Two chapters on travel compile commonly used Hebrew words,phrases and questions; one helpful list provides transliterated words and phrases a tourist in Israel is likely to need;another tackles common questions. For instance, the book includes "I am looking for a police department" ("Animekhapes mishtara") and "What is your name?" ("Ma shimkha?" for males and "Ma shmekh?" for females). Other areasof the book function more like a typical phrase book and include common verbs, alphabetized by their Englishcounterparts. Each verb is accompanied by details about conjugation, as well as related terms one might expect to usewith the verb. A brief English-to-Hebrew dictionary completes the handbook and includes phrases like "tov!" ("allright!"). For each term and phrase, Palchan provides the English word, the Hebrew translation and the Hebrewtransliteration, so the information is accessible to language learners at various stages, even those who can't yet readHebrew.
