One of the most important works of Jewish philosophy, 'The Kuzari' was written in the mid-twelfth century. A discourse between two figures, King and Rabbi, the book explores the foundations of faith, reason and existence. Many images and parables from 'The Kuzari' appear in kabbalistic and other writings.
'The Kuzari,' an explanation of the essence of the Jewish religion from the theological and religious aspect, dramatizes the relationship between the Jewish people, its history and the Creator. The book is the first major text of Jewish philosophy.

About the Author:
Born in Spain around 1085, Judah Halevi, the 'sweet singer of Israel,' was a passionate poet, religious philosopher and practicing physician. The Kuzari, 'an argument for the faith of Israel,' the 'defense of a despised faith,' placed the emphasis on the historic role of the Jewish people as witnesses to Divine revelation and as those people duty-bound to obey the commands ordained at Sinai. The concentration on the tradition form Adam to Abraham to Moses through the Sages restored the centrality of religion, nationalism and patriotism to Jewish awareness. Judah Halevi died around 1145 on a trip to Egypt.
Review:
"We can still learn much from Judah Halevi... his serene allegiance to history and the long-range forces of destiny high above the immediate brute realities and implacable forces of nature. His exposition of powerlessness as a superior counterpart to the forces of state supremacy..."
--Salo Baron

"In defending Judaism... against the philosophers, he was conscious of defending morality itself and therewith the cause, not only of Judaism, but of mankind at large."
--Leo Strauss
