First published in 1817, The History of Java is exceptional for its beautiful illustrations, notably the coloured aquatints by William Daniell, as well as for its wide-ranging subject-matter: geography, anthropology, archaeology, agriculture, natural history, religion, custom, history, language, and literature. The current edition comprises two volumes, available together in a slipcase, with one volume of text and one of illustrations. Volume I has a revised and enlarged Introduction, and is a reprint of the text of the first edition. Volume II reproduces the Atlas of Illustrations first produced in 1844, with a preface by Dr John Bastin.
