Sergio Pitol (México, 1933) es autor de siete libros de cuentos, cinco novelas y numerosas traducciones. Premio Herralde de Novela, Premio Mazatlán al mejor libro del año y Premio Juan Rulfo por la obra de una vida.
Pitol's El viaje provides an excellent glimpse into life in the former U.S.S.R. and the influence that central government exercised upon the republics during the 1980s through the period of perestroika. This well-conceived tale of journey and discovery confirms Pitol's ability to translate his experiences (as a member of the diplomatic corps, he traveled extensively throughout Eastern Europe) into interesting reading. Pitol, who was invited to the Soviet Union by the Union of Writers in 1986, uses fiction techniques to chronicle events. From the first page, the reader is caught up in his lively and informative day-to-day accounts: visits to museums with in-depth descriptions of important painters and their works, candid chats with numerous government officials and friends, plus a vivid description of the scenery and the cities. El Viaje is indeed a very instructive work and an eye-opener about what was happening in Russia at a time when communication was restricted. Appropriate for public and academic libraries alike, this work would benefit anyone interested in travelogs. Nelly S. Gonzalez, Univ. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign w
