Edmundo de Amicis was born in Oneglia in 1846, and was the youngest of five siblings. His father was engaged in the trade of salt and tobacco; He alternated his work with lessons that he imparted to his children. Passionate patriot, De Amicis studied at a lyceum in Turin and then entered the Army, where he was appointed official.
As such, he attended the Battle of Ustoza in 1866. During his military career he accepted the direction of the newspaper L'Italia Militare which was published in Florence until he was able to devote himself entirely to his literary works. In 1868 he wrote The Military Life and several books of places and customs, which were very successful. In 1883 he became famous for his novel Friends. In addition to Heart (1886), De Amicis addressed the theme of school and country in several books. Apparently, Heart is inspired both in his life as in that of his children and their respective classmates. De Amicis died in Bordighera, in 1908.
