About the Author:
Like the characters in many of his own novels, Camilo Ferreira Botelho Castelo Branco (1825-1890) lived a dramatic life full of tribulations. Born illegitimate and listed as the child of an 'unknown mother,' he was raised by his aunt and sister in rural Trás-os-Montes. Married at 16, he abandoned his new wife a short time later. He seduced a woman at 21 and was then arrested for bigamy and left her. By 1848, Camilo was living by his work as a journalist and had started writing the romantic novels that made him popular. When Camilo found the love of his life, Ana Plácido, in 1850, she was married to another.
