Richard Hinkle is a retired lieutenant commander in the United States Navy. He conceived the idea for this book while stationed in Istanbul with the Foreign Service from 1989-1993. As a volunteer coordinator for the Consulate motor launch, The Hiawatha, Richard spent many hours on the Bosphorus giving tours to visiting friends and government officials. He quickly found that there was no simple guide to the Bosphorus for tourists. Rhonda Vander Sluis, who also worked at the Consulate and was fluent in Turkish, became involved in the project at this point. When Richard's tour of duty ended he left the Bosphorus Guide project in Rhonda's capable hands. Hinkle and his wife Ella now live in the Washington D.C. area.
Rhonda Vander Sluis was born in Pringhar, Iowa. She moved to Turkey in 1990 and spent almost ten years there working as a free-lance writer and nurse educator. She accompanied Richard Hinkle on visits to the Yalis to speak with local residents and accessed Turkish resources as well. After Richard left Turkey, Rhonda continued to edit and update the captions and photographs and added one page articles on various aspects of life on the Bosphorus.
