The focus of this book is smart energy management with the recurring theme being the use of computational and data-driven methods that use requirements/measurement/monitoring data to drive actuation/control, optimization, and resource management. The computational perspective is applied to manage energy, with an emphasis on smart buildings and the smart electric grids. The book also presents computational thinking and techniques such as inferencing and learning for energy management. To this end, this book is designed to help understand the recent research trends in energy management, focusing specifically on the efforts to increase energy efficiency of buildings, campuses, and cities.

Prof. Krithi Ramamritham has spent almost equal lengths of time at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and at IIT Bombay as a Chair Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. He is now a Distinguished Professor with Sai University, Chennai, India.
During 2006–2009, he served as Dean (R&D) at IIT Bombay. He also headed IIT Bombay's Center for Urban Science and Engineering (CUSE).
He holds a PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Utah. He got his B.Tech (Electrical Engineering) and M.Tech (Computer Science) degrees from IIT Madras.
He is a recipient of IIT Bombay's prestigious S C Sahasrabuddhe Lifetime Achievement Award. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Robert Bosch Centre's Distinguished Fellowship from IIT Madras.
He is a Fellow of the IEEE, ACM, Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India, and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. He was honored with Outstanding Technical Contributions and Leadership Award from the IEEE Technical Committee for Real-Time Systems and the Outstanding Service Award from IEEE's CEDA.
His current research involves applying computational approaches to energy management, based on his S M A R T principle: Sense Meaningfully, Analyze and Respond Timely. As with his research since his PhD, his current work is driven by practical considerations and exploits and extends the state of the art in database systems, real-time computing, sensor networks, embedded systems, mobile computing and smart grids. He has guided over 40 PhD students. As per Google scholar, his publications have garnered over 23K citations with h-index exceeding 80 (https://www.cse.iitb.ac.in/~krithi/publications.html).
Dr Gopinath Karmakar is a Scientific Officer-H at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), India and also a faculty in BARC Training School. He has more than 30 years of experience in the field of Instrumentation and Control (I\&C) for Safety-Critical Systems in nuclear power plants (NPP) and nuclear research reactors, which includes development of Hard Real-Time Systems, Operating System for safety-critical applications, Software Engineering for Class IA and IB systems, Programmable Controllers and System engineering.
His present area of research is targeted to Smart Building/Home and working in this field over the past few years. Dr Karmakar has served as a member of the program committee in various national and international conferences including ACM e-Energy.
Prashant Shenoy is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst USA. His research interests are in distributed systems, networking, and computational sustainability. His work has won numerous best paper awards and a test of time award from ACM Sigmetrics. He serves as the founding chair of ACM Special Interest Group on Energy (SIGEnergy) and is on the editorial board of ACM Trans on Internet of Things. He has chaired energy-related conferences such as ACM e-Energy, ACM Buildsys and ACM/IEEE IoTDI. He is a Fellow of the ACM, the IEEE and the AAAS.
