Synopsis

Part of a series providing lay readers with the perspectives of Asian scholars on a variety of topics, this volume contains 32 papers by Acharya (deputy director, Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, Nanyang Technological U., Singapore) on the Bush administration's "War on Terror" and the politics of fear. He first explores civilizational aspects of contemporary terrorism, questioning the extent to which Islam should be seen as a root cause and particularly examining the experience of Southeast Asia. Seeing the Bush administration's policies as an aberration in American history, he then turns to current US strategies and politics, critically reviewing topics related to the invasion of Iraq from the perspective of international relations. Finally, he concludes by considering foundational issues of terrorism and democracy in American, global, and Asian contexts. The book is distributed in the US by ISBS.
