This richly illustrated book written by Professor Kai Peter Birke and several co-authors addresses both scientific and engineering aspects of modern batteries in a unique way. Emphasizing the engineering part of batteries, the book acts as a compass towards next generation batteries for automotive and stationary applications. The book provides distinguished answers to still open questions on how future batteries look like.
Modern Battery Engineering explains why and how batteries have to be designed for successful commercialization in e-mobility and stationary applications. The book will help readers understand the principle issues of battery designs, paving the way for engineers to avoid wrong paths and settle on appropriate cell technologies for next generation batteries. This book is ideal for training courses for readers interested in the field of modern batteries.
Readership: Engineers and professionals dealing with or specialising in cell technologies and their R&D. Also provides an advanced training course for anyone interested in the field of modern batteries.

Professor Kai Peter Birke is a physicist and a full Professor at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, covering the field of Electrical Energy Storage Systems, including new cell materials and technologies, advanced Li-Ion batteries and Power to X. He obtained his PhD in materials science (ion conducting ceramics) from the University of Kiel, Germany in 1998. In 1999, he joined the Fraunhofer-Institute for Silicon Technology, Itzehoe, Germany, to work on the development of proprietary Li-Ion laminated cells with a novel functional ceramic separator and co-founded two spin-offs to put this technology into production.
After being involved in the development and production of pouch type laminated (PoLiFlex) Li-Ion cells in leading positions at Varta for five years, Prof. Birke joined Continental AG, Business Unit Hybrid Electric Vehicle, in Berlin in 2005, first as a project leader in energy-storage systems. He became senior technical expert in battery technology and team leader in cell technology, and in 2010 he was appointed Head of Battery Modules and Electromechanics. 2013 he joined the JV SK-Continental e-motion as head of advanced development.
Dr Birke has 24 years of experience in research, development, and production of energy storage systems with a particular focus on Li-Ion technology.
