The material assumes only a high-school level knowledge of mathematics, with no requirement beyond introductory physics concepts. Prof. Andrew C Haas is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies of Physics at New York University. His research focuses on performing experiments at the world's largest particle accelerators, such as the LHC at CERN, to search for new particles or forces that would help explain mysteries of physics such as Dark Matter. He is co-leader of the milliQan experiment, which searches for new particles with very small electric charge. And he is leading the US effort to upgrade the readout electronics for the main calorimeter detector of the ATLAS experiment. His interests in electronics grew out of such research, and turned into a passion for creating lower-cost electronics tools, such as the "Haasoscope" brand of open-source high-speed oscilloscopes. In 2019 he designed a new class, "Electronics for Scientists," to teach essential electronics knowledge, along with practical hands-on exercises that students would need to succeed in a modern research lab. He continues to teach the class yearly to this day.
