Anatomy is the foundational subject in the medical curriculum. A deep understanding of anatomical concepts during the pre-clinical years is essential to ensure effective future clinical practice. Over the years, anatomy was taught using various approaches, including cadaveric dissection, prosection and plastinated specimens and illustrations. For many years, hand-drawn illustrations on black board using chalks were widely used by anatomists in the classroom. This approach formed the basis to conceptualise and edit the current book. Emeritus Prof. Ling, in his five decades of anatomy teaching, has collected his hand-drawn anatomical illustrations which provide integrated concepts of gross anatomy, histology (including both light and electron microscopy images), some aspects of developmental biology, and relevant neuroanatomical context. These illustrations have been digitalised in this book in order to share this rare knowledge of illustrations with future generation of medical students.
To reinforce learning, this textbook includes quizzes designed to assess comprehension, with answers provided in the appendix for self-paced review. Integrated illustrations featuring anatomical structures and neurofunctional circuits enhance conceptual clarity and help simplify complex neuronal information.
Overall, this textbook offers a cohesive blend of gross anatomy, histology, some aspects of developmental biology, and relevant neuroanatomical context. The colourful digital illustrations help students to build a strong foundation in gross anatomy relevant to clinical practice. This book also includes clinical scenarios and assessment component to challenge student understanding and self-evaluation of their knowledge.

Emeritus Professor Ling Eng Ang is a renowned academic in anatomy. With a career spanning five decades, he has become synonymous with his expertise and contributions to the field. He serves as the Chief Editor of the book, a testament to his extensive knowledge and expertise. He has served as an Anatomy Educator for a remarkable fifty years, continuously imparting his knowledge and skills to students. His dedication to teaching has made a lasting impact on countless individuals in medicine. He obtained his PhD in Cambridge under the supervision of Prof. E Neville Willmer, an eminent British histologist. Subsequently, he did his post-doctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Prof. Charles Philippe Leblond, a renowned histologist in Canada. It was during this period that he developed a deep passion for histology and neuroanatomy, which later influenced his career path.
As Head of Anatomy from 1998 to 2008 in NUS Medicine, he played a pivotal role in transforming the Department into a thriving center for human anatomy education. His vision and leadership guided the Department towards becoming a regional hub for human anatomy education in Asia. Among many notable contributions, developing the Anatomy Museum into one of the department's best learning resource centre was a remarkable achievement.
Prof. Ling always believes in traditional teaching approach in which hand-drawn anatomical illustrations are used as the main teaching resource. These hand-drawn illustrations prepared over the years have been digitalized and incorporated in this textbook.
Emeritus Professor Ling's dedication to anatomy and his unwavering commitment to excellence have earned him numerous accolades and recognition throughout his career. His expertise and passion for the field continue to inspire others, and his contributions have left an indelible mark on the field of anatomy.
Prof. Dheen served as Head of the Department of Anatomy at NUS from 2016-2022. Under his leadership, the Department launched several digital platforms including the Anatomy e-Museum and the Human Anatomy Learning Resources (HALO). These initiatives offer interactive and immersive learning experiences, effectively bridging the gap between traditional anatomy teaching and evolving technological approaches. He believes that such initiatives not only enhance students' retention and comprehension but also foster a deeper appreciation for anatomy and its relevance to clinical practice.
As Co-Editor of this book, Prof. Dheen brings together his educational expertise, digital vision and academic leadership to deliver a resource that is aligned with the modern enhanced curriculum. This book reflects his commitment towards making anatomy more accessible, integrated and impactful for the next generation of healthcare professionals.
His passion lies in developing innovative pedagogical approaches that enhance the students' learning experience. In particular, he has actively integrated technology into anatomy teaching, incorporating digital resources, interactive 3D models, and dynamic visualizations to deepen students' understanding of complex anatomical structures.
Beyond undergraduate education, Assoc. Prof. Yip contributes actively to continuing education training initiatives within the School, supporting postgraduate residents across various medical disciplines in expanding their anatomical knowledge.
These initiatives underscore his commitment to lifelong learning and his recognition of the importance of anatomy across all stages of medical training. His efforts not only enhance the learning experience at NUS but also contribute to the broader advancement of medical education in the region.
Her contributions to this volume include the electronically redrawing of original hand-drawn illustrations by Emeritus Prof. Ling Eng-Ang, thereby enhancing their anatomical accuracy and visual clarity. In addition to her artistic expertise, Dr Deepika has played a key role in formatting the final draft of the book using professional software, ensuring a learner-friendly digital resource with pedagogical effectiveness.
This work has also enabled her to further refine her educational practice using multiple digital learning platforms.
