The modernisation process has been going on in Fiji since last century and increased in tempo since the end of World War II in 1945, reaching a peak in 1969, on the eve f independence.
This study is an outgrowth of a concern with the problems of rural development and modernisation, specifically with the declining self-sufficiency among Fijians as "development" efforts intensify in rural areas. The rural area is increasingly hard-pressed, both by transfers of resources from it and by costs turned against it. Continuing dependence on some outside resource is inevitable.
The historical development of this new dependence is traced here, and some of the causes and unforeseen negative effects of "development" are highlighted.
