Chapter 1: Blockchain
Introduction to Blockchain
Decentralization
The blockchain is a digital ledger that is run by a network of computers working in a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) configuration. This means it is a collection of data and transactions that are stored and processed by computers around the world, all working together. This configuration uses the network of computers and cryptography to create a system that is secure, transparent and at the same time anonymous (don't worry if this doesn't make sense right now. We will explain it all in detail in this book).
There are two terms that you will need to understand - centralized platforms and decentralized platforms. With centralized platforms, data is required to pass through one singular point. This means that you cannot physically send or receive any information without it going through that one single point, which is often a server or hub. A great example of a centralized platform is Google, or almost any major bank. There are some centralized blockchains, too.
Decentralized platforms do not require information to pass through one single point. Instead, information is stored on many computers in the network, creating a peer-to-peer (P2P) network configuration. Examples of a decentralized platform are Bitcoin or Ethereum.
Decentralization is the main factor with regards to the security of the blockchain. As previously explained, decentralization means that instead of one centralized server holding all of the information, there are many computers around the world that store a copy of this information.
This makes losing information almost impossible because it is quite unlikely that all of the independent computers around the globe will crash simultaneously and lose your data. Even if one computer in the network crashes, there will still be plenty of computers that hold a copy of the information, keeping your data safe and secure.
Transparency and Anonymity
The word 'blockchain' is a derivative of two words - 'block' and 'chain'. All of the data that is broadcast to the blockchain is put into blocks, which are subsequently linked to the previous block, creating a chronological order of blocks - or a 'blockchain'.
This chronological order of transactions is immutable, meaning that once something is broadcast and recorded on the blockchain, it cannot be altered. Once information is recorded on the blockchain, it is set in stone, and it can no longer be changed. This ensures that no-one can change the history to their liking. It is there to stay.
All of the information about transactions on the blockchain is transparent and public, except for the users' personal information and the contents of their messages. This means that although all of the transactions are easily seen, the individuals who made the transactions are completely anonymous (the users are only identified by usernames or user IDs).
Cryptography
One of the tools used in blockchain technology to keep data safe is cryptography. This is a mathematical practice used to keep data hidden from third parties. This practice uses complex mathematical processes to encrypt information and keep it away from prying eyes, and these encryptions can only be decrypted by using certain keys. It is similar to when children create their own language to keep secrets from parents, but a more advanced version. We have a separate chapter for cryptography that goes more in depth.
The combination of decentralization, cryptography, and transparency gives a blockchain its unique characteristics. The decentralization aspect provides security and keeps data safe, while transparency gives the validating role to the underlying network of computers, successfully eliminating third-parties who, up until now, did the validation themselves. Cryptography allows a situation where information about transactions can be broadcast to everyone, while personal information about the sender is never revealed.
Advantages of Blockchain
Security - blockchain's decentralization makes the information stored on the blockchain incredibly secure, because a copy of the information is kept on many computers across the world, and not on one centralized server or computer .
High transaction speeds - blockchain also increases transaction speeds, as there are no lengthy confirmation times and the transactions move directly to the recipient, and not through multiple middlemen.
Anonymity - the use of cryptography keeps users' personal information and messages sent through the blockchain secret.
Accessibility - blockchain does not need any physical institutions to function. The only requirement is a connection to the internet.
Disadvantages of Blockchain
Database size - blockchain is not meant to store and send terabytes worth of data, as the network of computers doesn't have enough storage to hold vast amounts of data. So it's mainly used for transactions, not as a cloud storage platform.
Unexplored - as blockchain technology is relatively new, its full potential, as well as some of its pain points, are yet to be explored and solved.
Misinformation - the amount of false information about blockchain technology has been decreasing, but there are still sources that give misleading information.
Rapid change and volatility - the blockchain world is changing almost every day. Most noticeable is the volatility of cryptocurrencies. They can fluctuate a lot, meaning that people can gain, or lose a lot of money.
Scams - the misinformation and the lack of knowledge surrounding blockchain, cryptocurrencies and ICOs mean that people can be taken advantage of too easily. People want to be a part of the rapid growth and profits that many have experienced in the cryptoworld and therefore can get pulled into possible scams.

Imagine you have a friend who's visiting a foreign country. One day she calls you and tells you all about the wonderful times she is having, but she has miscalculated her expenditures and now has no money left. She asks you to send her some money and as a good friend, you agree to send her some money through a bank transfer.
You make the transaction and you notice that the transaction takes 2 days to reach your friend and above that, the bank takes a considerable fee from the transaction. Because of the long transfer time, your friend won't be able to buy the souvenir she wanted...
