Synopsis

In this book Erma celebrates Motherhood - the second oldest profession, and the biggest on-the-job training program ever. She views with warmth, humor, insight, and compassion the variety of roles mothers play, and rescues motherhood from the unreal realm of cliche, myth, and make-believe. Erma tells of the joys and pangs, the fulfillment and the frustration, the poignancy and the pathos of being a mother. All of Erma's book are hilarious because they are so true! If you are a mother, you'll identify with everything she says. Some favourite sections are the School for New Mothers Proposal in the first chapter. She suggests such classes as Creative Nagging 101, Legal Rights for Mothers, The History of Suspicion and Its Effects on Menopause and Threats and Promises. Chapter 36 is quite funny too. It's an A to Z of things moms have done that might provoke guilt. For example: X-raying for a swallowed nickel only after you heard it was a collector's coin worth $6.40 or hiding out in the bathroom when the kids are calling for you all over the house. It's certainly a good laugh and although it was written in 1983, it's still relevant and always will be! Erma Louise Bombeck(1927 - 1996) was an American humorist who achieved great popularity for her newspaper column that described suburban home life from the mid-1960s until the late 1990s. Bombeck also published 15 books, most of which became bestsellers. From 1965 to 1996, Erma Bombeck wrote over 4,000 newspaper columns chronicling the ordinary life of a midwestern suburban housewife with broad, and sometimes eloquent humor. By the 1970s, her columns were read, twice weekly, by 30 million readers of the 900 newspapers of the U.S. and Canada.

...hang up on E.T.?

...tip the tooth fairy?

...wash a measuring cup with soap after it held only water?

...reply when asked what it was like to give birth to Erma Bombeck, "It was a rooten job, but someone had to do it."
