About the Author:

Navigator and explorer Thor Janson first visited Guatemala in 1973 during a solo motorcyle tour of the Americas. Continuing his voyage around the world, he sailed to the remote islands of the South Pacific, went trekking across Africa and Asia, and lived with an Esquimo family in the Canadian Artic. In 1976 Janson decided to establish his planetary base of operations in Guatemala and since then he has worked in Central America as biologist, conservationist, photographer, and writer. In order to participate more directly in the conservation of the rain forest Janson decided to create his own organization and in 1982 founded Defensores de la Naturaleza where he remained as director until 1987. He subsequently was executive director of the Embassy of Nature, an organization dedicated to the preservation of wilderness and to promoting reforestation efforts, worlwide.
