Written for a broad audience and illustrated with beautiful color photographs, the book provides a fascinating view of the history, culture, economy, and landscape of perhaps the most enigmatic and picturesque valley in the high mountains of the Himalaya. The author's extensive research among the extraordinarily entrepreneurial Manang community residing in the Annapurna region of highland Nepal reveals a fascinating combination of factors responsible for the remarkable emergence of the group as prominent international traders in the 1960s and re-emergence as flourishing tourism entrepreneurs in the 1990s. A must read for visitors and for those with an interest in Tibetan Buddhist culture and the developing Himalaya region, the book offers compelling insights into the phenomena of entrepreneurship, cooperation, and competition within village communities.

About the Author:
The author, who holds a PhD and MA in Geography and an MBA in Business, all from the University of California at Berkeley, traveled and conducted research in the mountains of Nepal, India, Pakistan, Tibet and China for ten consecutive years. He spent five years living in Nepal while carrying out doctoral and post-doctoral research in Manang and Samdo and traveling in the Himalayan highland regions of Mustang, Nyishang, Nar-Phu, Nubri, Tsum, Langtang, Rolwaling, Khumbu, Walung, and Kangchenjunga. Dr. Rogers is also the author of The Lure of Everest, which provides a thought-provoking expose of the effects that tourism has had on the economy, environment, and culture of Nepal's Mount Everest region, as well as on the personal well-being and self-determination of the Sherpa people who live there.

Book Description Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Contents Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. History of entrepreneurial activity in Manang. 3. Factors behind Manang's entrepreneurial emergence. 4. Commercial opportunities. 5. Entrepreneurial culture. 6. Social systems of economic cooperation. 7. Regulation of private enterprise. 8. Conclusion. Bibliography. Remote from population centers roads markets and sources of capital the inhabited areas of Nepal's Himalayan highlands are generally characterized by a low level of commercial activity. A few groups in highland Nepal however stand out noticeably due to the widespread involvement of their members in business ventures. This economic asymmetry is quite striking particularly since the groups inhabiting Nepal's Himalayan highlands share a similar environmental and cultural milieu. The author's extensive research among the extraordinarily entrepreneurial Manang community residing in the Nyishang region of highland Nepal reveals a combination of factors responsible for this group's remarkable economic rise. The Manang community's emergence as prominent international traders in the 1960s and re emergence as flourishing tourism entrepreneurs in the 1990s can be primarily attributed to its members recognition and aggressive pursuit of commercial opportunities the accessibility within the group of capital for financing business ventures and a local cultural and regulatory environment encouraging entrepreneurial activity. While this book describes all of these factors and the roles they have played in the Manang community's economic success special attention is given to the means by which group members have cooperated with each other to make finance capital accessible within the community and guard against collectively harmful competitive practices subjects that have received relatively little attention from other scholars who have worked in highland Nepal. Written for a broad audience and illustrated with beautiful photographs the book provides a fascinating view of the history culture economy and landscape of perhaps the most enigmatic and most stunning valley in the high mountains of the Himalaya. A must read for visitors and for those with an interest in the developing Himalaya region offering useful insights into the phenomena of entrepreneurship cooperation and competition within village communities. 204 pp. Seller Inventory # 55920
