Clear Sky, Red Earth: A Himalayan Story tells a story of life Dolpo and Mustang, Nepal, deep in the Himalaya on the border with Tibet. The tale follows the life Namsel, a young village girl who grows up to be a talented painter. The tale of Namsel is based on the true biography of a woman who lived in Dolpo centuries ago and who was a renowned artist. It is a story of courage and adventure, a fairytale of risks taken and dreams realized, that also allows readers into the lives and lifeworlds of remote Tibetan communities. A portion of the sale of this book goes to support grassroots development projects in the Himalaya, through Drokpa.

He is known for his illustrations in other children's books including Himalaya: L'enfance d'un Chef (Paris: Milan, 2000; based on the Academy Award nominated film) and Secret of the Snow Leopard. Norbu's work has been exhibited in the United States, France, Switzerland, Monaco, Japan, and Nepal. He divides his time between Dolpo and Kathmandu, Nepal.
This illustrated book is the charming tale of Namsel, a young girl from Dolpo who exhibits an unusual artistic talent and succeeds in realizing her dreams. Entirely suitable for adults but targeted at children aged seven and upwards, Clear Sky, Red Earth: A Himalayan Story has all the makings of a classic fairytale, rooted in historical events, such as the triumph of social obstacles, mysterious creativity, and the intervention of royalty...The text is engaging and joyful, full of gentle humor and cultural insight...The illustrations are splendid. --Mark Turin, Nepali Times, 4/2005
