Acccount of the 1868 Battle of Beecher Island in Colorado, one of the legendary battles of the U.S. Army on the Western frontier. A handpicked group of 48 US Army scouts was pinned down by a party of 200-1000 Cheyenne and Sioux warriors led by Roman Nose. Taking cover in a creekbed, the Army scouts fought a disciplined defense and used their new Spencer rifles to repulse a series of savage attacks until Roman Nose was killed and the Indians withdrew.
