From AudioFile

This novel marked the return of the Ellery Queen series after a five-year hiatus, as well as the beginning of a new phase in Queen's detective exploits. Player makes for an awkward adaptation. The story involves a complex, puzzle-like plot; the printed novel included a map, diagrams and typographic changes, none of which translate to audio. One has trouble deciphering certain names: "Ann Drew" sounds like "Andrew," and "Y's Gambit" sounds like "wise gambit." Narration and characters are well differentiated by David Edwards, but his voice often comes across as tired and flat, made worse by the fuzzy recording quality. S.E.S. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Hardcover. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Book Club Edition. Front hinge starting. Slight lean; minor; York Square is a tidy private garden surrounded by four matching castles, each inhabited by a different branch of the York family. There's Robert, commanding and icy; Myra, gentle and ill; Emily, who would prefer to live in a cottage; and Percival, who has many personal secrets. Watching them all is the gardener, Walt, who sees more than any of them realize. When an anonymous scribe starts sending him letters of praise, Walt is happier than he's ever been. But when a strange card marked with the letter J heralds the death of Robert, the happy garden begins to wilt. Unlocking the puzzle of the bizarre notes falls to the legendary Ellery Queen. He finds that the Yorks are locked in a ghoulish bargainone that can only be escaped by death. ; 7.75 x 5.25 x 1 inches; 213 pages Very Good wear to spine ends. Light corner bumps. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. The boards are slightly edge worn, but remain strong and square. The dust jacket is rubbed, marked and worn, with small chips out of the top and bottom edges. This does not affect the legibility of the text, and the jacket remains whole and bright. Internally, the first and last few pages are a touch foxed, but this does not extend into the body of the book. The pages within are crisp, clean and complete. The binding is tight and it is presented charmingly in cellophane. JV.K. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services. Seller Inventory # orqz
