Der Komponist habe darin vieles verarbeitet: gesundheitliche Leiden, die soziale Isolation aufgrund seiner fortschreitenden Ertaubung, und den Selbstmordversuch seines Neffen Karl. Man erzählt sich auch, Franz Schubert habe auf seinem Totenbett gewünscht, dieses Werk noch einmal hören zu dürfen.
