Synopsis
These are the last of the nearly seventy quartets in Haydn's oeuvre. Originally he intended to write a set of six quartets, as so often in the past, but at the time they were written, in 1803, Haydn's health was so poor that he could not fully satisfy the commission from Prince Lobkowitz. Instead he published only two complete quartets as, Op. 77. Later he allowed an incomplete work consisting of two middle movements to appear as, Op. 103, adding to the print the portentous words: "Gone is all my strength, old and weak am I." Musically, however, these quartets are anything but weak: they represent the aged composer virtually at the zenith of his powers. Initialement le compositeur avait prévu, comme il l'avait souvent fait auparavant, d'écrire une série de six quatuors. Toutefois, vers 1803, Haydn est très malade et il ne publie finalement, sous le numéro d'opus 77, que deux quatuors complets. Plus tard, il fait aussi éditer sous le numéro d'opus 103 un quatuor à cordes inachevé, composé de deux mouvements centraux. Il ajoute à son édition les mots suivants: «Toute mon énergie est épuisée, je suis vieux et malade». Néanmoins ces oeuvres sont loin de manquer de souffle; elles représentent un summum dans la production du compositeur. On a même dit de l'op. 77 No 2 qu'il s'agissait du «plus beau quatuor à cordes» de Haydn._; Dies sind die letzten von insgesamt fast 70 Streichquartetten, die Haydn schuf. Ursprünglich sollte es - wie so oft zuvor - eine Serie von sechs Quartetten werden. Doch war Haydn um die Entstehungszeit 1803 zu krank, um den Kompositionsauftrag des Fürsten Lobkowitz ganz umzusetzen. So veröffentlichte er als op. 77 nur zwei vollständige Quartette. Später ließ er als op. 103 zusätzlich noch ein unvollendetes Werk drucken, das aus zwei Mittelsätzen besteht. Vielsagend fügte er dem Druck folgende Worte hinzu: 'Hin ist alle meine Kraft, alt und schwach bin ich. 'Musikalisch sind diese Werke alles andere als kraftlos.
