On ignore presque tout de Hong Zicheng (1572-1620), surnommé Maître Huanchou. Il serait originaire de la province du Sichuan et aurait été le disciple de Yuan Huang, dans la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle, qui marque la fin de la dynastie Ming.
