Synopsis

Set in late-century Italian Harlem, this novel chronicles the captivating saga of Italian immigrants in America, driven by an inner passion that ignites a plot filled with business dealings and romantic entanglements, as they navigate their new lives. The story begins in Villetto, Italy, where protagonist Agnese Filoppina gives birth to the son of priest Gelsomino Merlino, marries the simple Michele Dantone, and moves to Italian Harlem with their child, Giovanni. Despite never truly loving her husband, Agnese maintains affection for business rival Antonio Farinella and Father Gelsomino, who flees Italy shortly after her departure. Meanwhile, Agnese builds a thriving real estate empire, earning respect from Italian immigrants while shaming her idle husband. As these characters pursue love and wealth, fueled by their inner fire, Giovanni seeks to transcend his mundane environment through art. Garibaldi Mario Lapolla, a Lucan writer born in 1888, emigrated to New York in 1890 and grew up in East Harlem. After completing his studies, Lapolla taught grammar, American literature, and English literature. His notable works include 'Fire in the Flesh' (1931), 'Miss Rollins in Love' (1932), and 'The Grand Gennaro' (1935), establishing him as a significant figure in immigration literature alongside authors like John Fante, Pietro Di Donato, and Arturo Giovannitti.
