The Benelli A.R.G.O.
by Simone Giaquinto
A.R.G.O. is three things at once: an acronym that names a mechanism — Auto-Regulating Gas-Operated — a Benelli
patent created in 1998 for the M4 shotgun built for the United States Marine Corps, and the model name of a line of
semi-automatic rifles. This guide holds all three levels together and carries them into service.
The first part follows one firing cycle as a thermodynamic problem: deflagration and the pressure curve, the gas tap
under the barrel close to the chamber, expansion against a short-stroke piston, the self-regulating valve that vents the
surplus, dwell time and thermal load. It explains why a single action digests cartridges as different as the .308
Winchester, the .30-06 Springfield and the .300 Winchester Magnum, and what that costs and buys in reliability,
cleanliness and maintenance.
The second part carries the same rifle into service: transport, floating armouries and the rental model for arms held in
international waters, embarkation aboard merchant vessels, training, conservation, cleaning and serial-numbered
documentation. It closes with the maritime legislation of the High Risk Areas — Egypt and the Suez Canal, Saudi
Arabia, Jordan, Djibouti, Sri Lanka, India, Yemen, the United Kingdom's Section 5 authority regime, and the Italian
framework from Law 130/2011 to Ministry of the Interior Decree 139/2019 — set out as a map to be verified rather
than a permission to be assumed.
The volume does not inflate the rifle's place in the sector. The Benelli arms that dominate maritime security are
shotguns; the A.R.G.O. rifles occupy a narrower and more precise set of tasks — the warning shot made visible at
distance, disabling fire against an outboard engine, the engagement of a mother ship. That is stated plainly, and it is
why the guide is useful to the person who has to decide and not only to the person who has to fire.
