What does excellent technical and technology leadership look like when artificial intelligence is becoming an active participant in how organizations think, decide, learn, and act?
The previous editions of this book were published in 2016 and 2019. I updated and wrote this new edition for technology executives, senior technical professionals, architects, engineers, consultants, transformation leaders, business executives, emerging leaders, CEOs, and board members, to serve as both a leadership guide and an executive reflection framework in the new AI era.
Technology leadership has entered a new era. Cloud computing, data platforms, cybersecurity, automation, and digital ecosystems have already changed how organizations operate. Agentic systems, cognitive computing, intelligent automation, and autonomous technologies are now changing something deeper: how work is performed, how decisions are made, how organizational knowledge is used, and how human and machine intelligence work together.
This book began with my practical leadership framework developed from decades of observing technical and technology leaders across enterprises, client organizations, academic environments, and major transformation programs. Its original foundations, innovation, simplicity, agility, collaboration, fusion, and technical excellence, were well received by technology leaders and served as practical guidance that enabled the successful delivery of numerous digital transformation initiatives.
Versions 1 & 2 preserved those established foundations but new version take them considerably further. The central argument is that technology alone does not create meaningful transformation. Sustainable outcomes happen when technological capability is intelligently connected with organizational purpose, business value, architecture, people, processes, governance, culture, learning, risk management, and leadership. This has become even more important in the age of AI.
Greater technological capability can create extraordinary opportunities, but without mature leadership and architectural coherence, it can also accelerate complexity, dependency, risk, and poor decisions. This expanded edition therefore moves beyond conventional digital transformation toward intelligent transformation: the disciplined orchestration of technological capability, organizational intelligence, human expertise, and strategic purpose.
Drawing on 4 decades of professional observation, systematic journals, research, scholarly triangulation, and practical experience, I examine technology leadership as an interconnected executive capability rather than a collection of management techniques. The framework is practice-informed and research-aware, designed to help leaders think critically rather than follow another prescriptive formula.
You will explore technical and technology leadership from multiple interconnected perspectives, including executive cognition and judgment, innovation, simplicity, agility, productive collaboration, human-machine fusion, technical fluency, enterprise architecture, sociotechnical systems, dynamic capabilities, change leadership, business architecture, workforce redesign, AI governance, decision intelligence, organizational learning, and the emerging intelligent enterprise.
The book also challenges a dangerous assumption: that seniority allows technology executives to distance themselves from technical understanding. Modern CIOs, CTOs, CDOs, chief architects, AI leaders, transformation executives, and business leaders do not need to master every technical discipline. They do, however, need sufficient technological literacy and architectural judgment to challenge assumptions, recognize dependencies, evaluate risk, distinguish genuine capability from fashionable terminology, and understand the consequences of their decisions.
