Synopsis

The arithmetic that scraps a part is rarely difficult. It is a feed in inches per revolution entered as inches per minute, a surface speed as a spindle speed before a diameter has been introduced, or a tap-drill rule of thumb treated as though it were an acceptance limit. The mistake is small, the consequence is not, and it is usually visible only after the part has been cut.

The knowledge that prevents those errors is scattered. Cutting data comes from a catalog page, pitch diameters from a thread book, angles from a trigonometry table, offsets from a control manual — none of them stating the rigidity, tool grade or coolant condition that would make the figure correct on your machine. Controls now perform more of the calculation for you, which helps until the first part is measured and the number's origin cannot be examined.

This 574-page reference gathers that knowledge into one volume and connects it. Twenty-five chapters follow the order a job is actually set up: arithmetic and measurement, then the material, then the cutting edge, then the speeds and feeds that follow from both, and only then the operations, threads and inspection. Every formula carries the units it expects, a worked example in shop numbers, and the failure it exists to prevent.

Inside this book you will

  • Set spindle speed and feed from material, tool and diameter, recover surface speed from a running RPM, and choose a practical setting between the machine's steps.
  • Treat cutting data as a chain: diameter sets speed, chip load sets feed, engagement sets the power the machine must deliver — with removal rate, torque and horsepower checked before the cut.
  • Turn a print into limits and a plan, through clearance, transition and interference fits, hole- and shaft-basis systems, datums, position and bonus tolerance, and virtual condition.
  • Work holemaking backwards from the finished feature: drill selection and point-length allowance, pecking and chip evacuation, reaming allowance, boring for roundness, counterbore, countersink and spotface geometry.
  • Find the pitch diameter, class of fit and gauging method for inch, metric, pipe, Acme, stub Acme and buttress threads in one place.
  • Calculate bolt circles, rotate and mirror patterns between datums, stack gage blocks for a sine bar, and verify coordinates and offsets before the first cut.
  • Diagnose by evidence, tracing chatter, taper, bell-mouth, burrs, oversize and poor finish to a cause through symptom-driven troubleshooting sequences.

One hundred and seven reference tables, seventy-five figures, more than eighty bench-check procedures and a formula recap closing every chapter support the text. A master reference chapter gathers the whole book into shop-floor form: a formula index organized by problem, conversion pages, speed and feed cards, a holemaking quick reference, turning and milling cards, a thread lookup map, inspection reminders, setup checklists, troubleshooting trees and worksheets — followed by a glossary and an index keyed to chapter and section.

Published figures are treated as a defensible place to begin rather than a specification, to be confirmed by a test cut, the sound of the machine and the shape of the chip. Where a value is governed by a standard, machine manual or product data, the text says so and points to the controlling source rather than implying the arithmetic settles it.

Who it is for: working machinists on manual and computer-controlled equipment, toolmakers, operators, setters and shop-floor supervisors, inspection and quality staff, and anyone earning their hours who wants the reasoning behind the number.

Keep it at the bench, open it at the machine, and start working from figures you can defend.
