In 2049, an observatory high in the Himalayas detects something that should not exist.
A repeating signal is coming from the TRAPPIST-1 system—nearly forty light-years away. At first, scientists believe it may be an unusual astronomical phenomenon. Then they discover the pattern.
The signal repeats every forty-one seconds.
And hidden inside it is something impossible: a sequence resembling human DNA.
As astrophysicist Arjun Mehta and his team attempt to decode the transmission, they uncover evidence of a secret project that governments have spent decades hiding. The deeper they investigate, the more disturbing the discoveries become—an artifact buried beneath Himalayan ice, a mysterious black satellite, a photograph apparently originating from the future, and a message that suggests humanity may not be receiving a transmission from another civilization at all.
They may be receiving a message from themselves.
With every answer comes another question. Who sent the signal? Why does it contain information connected to human biology? And how could anyone have known what humanity would become?
As the investigation expands from Earth to Mars and beyond, Arjun realizes that the signal is not simply a message waiting to be decoded.

And humanity may already have crossed the point where it can choose whether to listen.
