Synopsis
This is a teaching document, not a substitute for a living relationship with a priest or spiritual father or mother. Orthodox moral teaching is never meant to be applied by a reader alone with a book. Every chapter assumes that the reader will eventually bring these questions — especially the hard, personal ones — into confession and spiritual direction, where general principles become concrete guidance for a particular life.
The guide is organized in five parts: foundational theology that applies to everyone; teaching addressed to single adults, whether never married or single again after divorce; teaching addressed to the married; teaching addressed to the divorced and remarried; and practical tools for living out what has been said. Readers can go straight to the part that concerns their own state in life, but the foundational section in Part One is worth reading first, because it explains why the Church teaches what it teaches, not only what the teaching is.
