In March 2025, Manchester United Football Club announced its plans to build a new 100,000-seater stadium next to the existing Old Trafford stadium, which was originally opened in 1910. The new stadium will be part of a wider regeneration project for the locality. Foster & Partners were appointed to lead the design of the new stadium and the surrounding area. This book recollects first-hand accounts of some of the most exciting games that have been played at Old Trafford in my lifetime. Bobby Charlton once dubbed Old Trafford as “The Theatre of Dreams” and in a stream of nostalgia the book recounts the exploits of some of the most renowned actors who have performed on that stage, including Charlton himself, George Best, Denis Law, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Eric Cantona, to name a few. For many fans, there will be sadness when the old stadium closes and Manchester United move into the prospect of beginning a new era in a new stadium. Manchester United has endured and enjoyed the vicissitudes of fortune on many significant occasions during its time at Old Trafford, from the despair of the tragic air disaster at Munich in 1958 to the resurrection of the club when they became the first English club to win the European Cup under Sir Matt Busby, from the ignominy of relegation to the old Second Division in 1974 to the ultimate celebration of being the first English club to win the treble of League, FA Cup and Champions League Trophy in 1999. What evolves in the future at the new stadium is a matter of speculation. But the experiences of attending matches at the old stadium at Old Trafford will linger in the memory with stories that are recaptured in this book.
