Three tracks. Three strangers. One wild team.
The spy kittens are going CAMPING! When Pawpaw — that's Mr. Buck, the grandkids' grandpa — loads up the pickup for a trip to the cedar hills, Riley, Rowdy, and Halo stow away in the gear. New territory. New smells. New mysteries.
And the very first morning, the camp is FULL of clues: mysterious holes dug everywhere, a long lonely howl rolling down from the hills, and a great shadow circling overhead without a single wingbeat. Rowdy knows one thing for sure — these tracks are not from home.
Reading the tracks leads the spies to the wild's own spy team: Fred the armadillo, a gentle digger in a suit of armor; Sebastian the red-tailed hawk, chief scout of the hills with eyes eight times sharper than ours; and Thor the coyote, whose fearsome howl turns out to be something wonderful — a song, the way coyote families say "I'm here, I'm safe, goodnight" across the miles.
Then there's spotlighting from the bed of Pawpaw's pickup — flashlights sweeping the brush for deer, cottontails, raccoons, and possums, every pair of eyes glowing like tiny lanterns (and the real science of eyeshine that makes it happen!). Plus marshmallows around the campfire, and a rescue: when Rowdy follows one detail too many and gets lost in the dark, it takes the whole wild team — hawk eyes, coyote song, and armadillo arrows — to bring their spy home.
Kids will practice real wilderness skills:
Author Tami Schultz — biologist, and software developer — lives on the South Texas ranch where the real Riley and Rowdy patrol every night. Book 3 of the Spy Kittens series. Perfect for ages 4–8, campfire read-alouds, and every kid who loves stories told around a campfire.
