He tied a stone against his belly to get through the night. He fell unconscious on the mosque floor from hunger, and men stepping over him put a foot on his neck, thinking he was mad. He had a little over four years beside the Prophet. From those four years came more transmitted reports than from any other Companion, and fourteen hundred years of argument about how that could possibly be true.
