The machine accepts the letter, reports success, and quietly destroys it. Nobody is told. In the seventeenth century a merchant who sent a letter by sea knew he was gambling, and behaved accordingly. Today the gamble is concealed behind a green checkmark.
Peter Kriger argues that this small disappearance is not a glitch but a signature.
