Synopsis

This book was written with the ambition of serving as a comprehensive textbook on dental education. Although the field itself has a long history, for reasons that are not entirely clear, truly comprehensive textbooks devoted to dental education remain surprisingly difficult to find.

There may be many reasons for this. One possible explanation lies in the tradition of medical and dental education itself, which has long been rooted in apprenticeship—the transmission of knowledge and skills from one expert to another. As a result, there may historically have been relatively little systematic consideration of how best to teach larger numbers of students effectively.

It is uncertain whether there has ever been a clear consensus on what exactly constitutes the discipline of dental education, or what its academic aims should be. Nevertheless, I believe that education within any specialized field begins with a simple and fundamental question: how can we teach that field well to our students?

What makes this question increasingly difficult is the extraordinary speed at which the world around us—and the technologies within it—continues to change. In many educational settings, traditional methods are still followed simply because they are familiar. Yet those who are responsible for educating future dental professionals, who in turn will bear responsibility for the oral health of people around the world, should possess at least a basic understanding of what we variously call education, educational technology, and teaching methodology.

It is in this spirit that this book was written. In a field where comprehensive textbooks remain scarce, I have attempted to present the most fundamental knowledge using the clearest and most basic terminology possible.

As I have noted in this preface, this book may be an imperfect piece of work, but I am convinced that it can nevertheless represent a meaningful—and, I hope, beautiful—beginning. Education itself is not about transforming the imperfect into the perfect; rather, it is about helping what is imperfect become more complete.

This book, too, is far from perfect. Yet it may be regarded as a bold attempt to take a first step into territory that cannot be explored unless someone is willing to move first. Like the “first penguin” that ventures into uncertain waters before the rest of the group, someone must be willing to take that initial leap.

And this book is intended to be such a first step.
