Synopsis

A sweeping story of courage, sacrifice, and the price of belonging
In The Scent of Lemons, Part Two: The Far West, the Licata family's American journey continues in a chapter filled with heartbreak, resilience, and the ever-present hunger for a place to truly call home.
Maria Liotta is the kind of woman history tends to overlook. She does not lead armies or make headlines. She keeps her family fed, keeps her faith burning, and keeps moving forward no matter what the world throws at her. And the world has thrown plenty. Two world wars. The devastation of the Spanish flu. A husband out of work in a country that has never fully welcomed them. The quiet, grinding humiliation of being seen as foreign, as less than, as people who do not quite belong.
Still, Maria persists. Because that is what love looks like when love has to be practical.
When the family makes the bold decision to head west to California, it feels like the turning point they have been waiting for. Sun. Opportunity. A new chapter. But the Far West is not as simple as the dream, and the arrival of Baldassare's brother Nick complicates everything. Nick has a way of opening doors, but Maria has lived long enough to know that some doors open onto places you can never come back from.
The Far West is a richly layered historical novel for readers who love: Italian immigrant fiction and the untold stories of early 20th century America, strong women protagonists navigating impossible circumstances with grit and grace, family sagas that span generations and continents, historical fiction set during World War I, World War II, and the Great Depression, stories of the American immigrant experience told with honesty and heart, West Coast historical fiction and California saga novels, and organized crime fiction woven into family drama.
If you were captivated by The Scent of Lemons, Part One, Maria's story grows richer, more complex, and more urgent in this powerful second installment. And if this is your first encounter with the family, you will find yourself immediately at home in Maria's world, rooting for her with every page.
This is a story about what people do for love. What they endure. What they refuse to surrender. And what happens when the life you have built is threatened by something you never saw coming.
