Five minutes a day for the one who is carrying everyone else.
This devotional is for the one caring for a mother, a husband, or a father who is failing, more tired than she has ever been, and who hasn't told anyone the truth in a long time. If a devotional assumes you have thirty quiet minutes, you will abandon it on day nine. This one asks for five.
Each of the ninety days includes:
- A verse from the New King James Version
- A short, honest reflection
- TODAY: one small, specific thing to do
- A prayer you can pray when you have no words of your own
- Two more passages to read when you have the time
The days move through three movements of thirty:
- The Weight: naming what is happening before trying to lift it
- The Turn: taking apart the beliefs about guilt, honor, and rest that have made the load heavier than it needs to be
- The Long Obedience: endurance, prayer that has gone quiet, and hope that does not depend on the outcome
Read it while the coffee brews, in the car outside the pharmacy, or at eleven at night with the light low. If you open it on a terrible day and the reading does not fit, turn to whichever day does.
You will not be asked to produce better feelings about your mother, your family, or God. You will be asked to see accurately. That is a smaller request, and it is one you can meet tonight.
Written from a woman's point of view, it speaks just as truly to husbands, sons, and anyone caring for someone they love.
