Synopsis

Grief isn't five stages. It's a million.

If you've ever wondered whether you're grieving the “right” way, this book was written for you.

Grief doesn't follow a straight line. It doesn't obey a timeline. And it cannot be contained within five predictable stages.

In 2016, Michael Reed lost his wife and both of his daughters in the Gatlinburg wildfire. In the years that followed, he searched for answers about grief and discovered something that changed the way he understood not only his loss, but himself: grief reaches far beyond sadness. It can reshape your identity, your beliefs, your relationships, your sense of purpose, and even the future you once imagined.

So he began writing about what grief actually felt like from inside it.

The hurt. The sorrow. The fear. The loneliness. The trauma. The memories. The questions. The days when simply surviving felt impossible.

Those writings became the foundation of The Million Stages of Grief.

Part personal story and part practical guide, this book pairs raw writings from Reed's own journey through devastating loss with reflection, grief research, coping tools, and guidance to help you better understand your own.

At its center is The Million Stages Model, a framework for understanding grief not as a sequence of steps to complete, but as a deeply personal experience that can affect every part of life, including emotion, memory, identity, attachment, physical well-being, beliefs, meaning, and the future.

Inside The Million Stages of Grief, you'll explore:

  • Why grief rarely follows a predictable timeline
  • Why emotions can collide, disappear, and return without warning
  • How loss can change your identity, relationships, beliefs, and sense of the future
  • How grief and trauma affect both the mind and body
  • Why healing does not require forgetting, closure, or “moving on”
  • How to carry an enduring connection with someone who has died
  • The roles of support, acceptance, growth, creative expression, and rebuilding
  • How grief and joy can exist in the same life

This book will not tell you how long you are allowed to grieve.

It will not give you a checklist for getting over someone you love.

And it will not promise that grief simply disappears with time.

Instead, it offers something you may desperately need:

Permission to grieve in your own way.

Because your grief is not a sign of weakness. It is a reflection of love. Your pain is not proof that you are broken. It is proof that someone mattered.

And even after devastating loss, your story is not finished.

You don't have to leave your grief behind to find your way forward.

About the Author

Michael Reed is an author, speaker, and certified grief coach whose work focuses on understanding grief, trauma, and the long road of rebuilding life after devastating loss.

In 2016, Michael lost his wife and both of his daughters in the Gatlinburg wildfire. In the years that followed, he began searching for answers about grief and discovered that his experience did not resemble the traditional "five stages of grief" often described in popular culture. Instead, grief unfolded in countless shifting moments—waves of sorrow, memory, anger, love, and reflection. That realization became the foundation for his book The Million Stages of Grief.

Drawing from his personal experience and his study of behavioral sciences, Michael writes about grief as a deeply individual and evolving journey rather than a predictable sequence of stages. His work aims to give language to the complex emotions that follow devastating loss and to reassure grieving people that their experience is not broken, abnormal, or wrong.

Michael is also the author of The Million Stages of Healing, a companion book that explores the gradual process of rebuilding identity, meaning, and purpose after loss.
Through his writing, speaking, and public conversations about grief, Michael hopes to help others understand that while loss changes life forever, it does not erase the possibility of meaning, connection, and healing.
