Grief isn't five stages. It's a million.
If you've ever wondered whether you're grieving the “right” way, this book was written for you.
Grief doesn't follow a straight line. It doesn't obey a timetable. And it cannot be contained within five predictable stages.
In 2016, Michael Reed lost his wife and both of his daughters in the devastating Gatlinburg wildfire. In the years that followed, he faced far more than sadness. Grief affected his identity, relationships, beliefs, sense of purpose, and the future he once imagined.
During some of his darkest years, Reed began writing about what grief actually felt like from the inside.
The sorrow. The anger. The fear. The loneliness. The trauma. The memories. The questions. The days when simply getting through another hour felt impossible.
Those writings became the foundation of The Million Stages of Grief.
Determined to understand what he was experiencing, Reed spent years studying grief and loss through academic education, independent research, personal therapy, and lived experience. What emerged was a deeper understanding of grief as a complex, deeply individual experience that reaches into nearly every dimension of human life.
The Million Stages of Grief: Finding Your Way Through Devastating Loss brings together those two perspectives: the raw, unfiltered words of a man experiencing catastrophic loss and the knowledge and understanding he developed in the years that followed.
Inside, readers will explore:
Why grief cannot be reduced to five predictable stages or a universal timetable.
How loss can reshape identity, relationships, beliefs, and the future you once envisioned.
The emotional, psychological, physical, and social effects of grief.
Why memories, anniversaries, and unexpected reminders can bring powerful reactions.
How to navigate isolation, guilt, anger, uncertainty, and the pressure to move on.
The role of connection, professional support, and practical coping strategies.
How healing and continuing to love someone can exist together.
What it means to rebuild a meaningful life without leaving the people you've lost behind.
This book does not promise a cure for grief. It does not offer a checklist for closure or suggest that healing means returning to the person you were before.
Instead, it offers something more valuable: an honest account of devastating loss, a thoughtful examination of what grief does to a human being, and practical insight for navigating a life forever changed.
Part personal account, part exploration of grief, and part compassionate guide, The Million Stages of Grief challenges conventional assumptions about mourning while offering understanding to those who may feel lost in their own experience.
You don't have to complete five stages to prove you're healing. You don't have to stop loving someone to move forward. And you don't have to navigate a million stages alone.

Michael Reed is an author, speaker, and certified grief coach whose work focuses on understanding grief, trauma, and the long road of rebuilding life after devastating loss.
In 2016, Michael lost his wife and both of his daughters in the Gatlinburg wildfire. In the years that followed, he began searching for answers about grief and discovered that his experience did not resemble the traditional "five stages of grief" often described in popular culture. Instead, grief unfolded in countless shifting moments—waves of sorrow, memory, anger, love, and reflection. That realization became the foundation for his book The Million Stages of Grief.
Drawing from his personal experience and his study of behavioral sciences, Michael writes about grief as a deeply individual and evolving journey rather than a predictable sequence of stages. His work aims to give language to the complex emotions that follow devastating loss and to reassure grieving people that their experience is not broken, abnormal, or wrong.
Michael is also the author of The Million Stages of Healing, a companion book that explores the gradual process of rebuilding identity, meaning, and purpose after loss.
Through his writing, speaking, and public conversations about grief, Michael hopes to help others understand that while loss changes life forever, it does not erase the possibility of meaning, connection, and healing.
