Synopsis
Jack Correll, the mastermind behind most of the events of the first two books has a high opinion of his own abilities and never makes a mistake. In the first two books of the series, he easily brings his cadre of scientists underground, evades capture, circumvents questions about his real mission, and plays games of cat and mouse with Sanderson's spy. But the one enemy that he can't defeat is himself. When Alec leaves him, his scientists turn against him, and almost everyone in the underworld wants him dead, his depression and feelings of alienation become more than he can handle. He embarks on a suicide mission deep in the drainage tunnels below the inhabited levels of the underworld, and the lives of everyone below the surface hang in the balance of whether or not he'll return.
