My name is Stephen Bradeley, and I am based in the United Kingdom. I hold a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Sports Science from Staffordshire University, where I studied during the 1990s. My academic focus was on exercise for health, with a particular emphasis on hypokinetic diseases. For my dissertation, I explored aspects of breast cancer, a subject that has personal significance for me.
During my time at university, I developed a keen interest in breast cancer research due to my family’s diagnosis as carriers of the BRCA2 gene. The BRCA2 gene is a tumour suppressor, and mutations within this gene can markedly increase the risk of developing certain cancers, especially breast and ovarian cancer. Mutations in BRCA2, as well as BRCA1, are key contributors to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC).
Unfortunately, two of my sisters were diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age, which further deepened my commitment to this field.
More recently, my interest has expanded to include grounding—or earthing—as a potential intervention for inflammatory diseases. This book aims to provide readers with a foundational understanding of grounding, its principles, and its possible benefits, particularly in relation to inflammation and overall health.
Earthing, also known as grounding, is the practice of connecting oneself to the Earth's surface electrons by direct contact with the ground or through conductive systems such as mats, sheets, bracelets and earthing rods. This concept is rooted in the idea that the Earth's surface has a vast reservoir of free electrons that can neutralize free radicals and reduce electrical imbalances within the body, potentially leading to health benefits. Advocates believe that modern lifestyles—characterized by frequent use of insulated shoes, synthetic clothing, and indoor environments—create a disconnect from the Earth's natural energy, which may contribute to inflammation, stress, fatigue, and various chronic health issues.
