Synopsis
The capture of the sloop Ranger occurred on June 10th, 1723, near Block Island in the Atlantic Ocean. Two pirate ships under the command of Englishmen Edward Low and Charles Harris attacked HMS Greyhound, a sixth-rate warship of the British Royal Navy under the command of Captain Peter Solgard, which they mistook for a civilian whaler. The resulting engagement lasted for several hours and ended with Harris' sloop Ranger being captured by the HMS Greyhound while Low's schooner named Fancy escaped. Harris and the captured crew would be sent to Newport, Rhode Island to be jailed and stand trial for Acts of Piracy against the Crown, where they would be sentenced to death. In what is known as the Largest Mass Execution of Pirates in Rhode Island History.
In 'Capture of the Sloop Ranger", Gregory Duhamel, public historian and author of three books on Rhode Island history, tries to uncover and explore the life stories of Harris, Low, and other infamous pirates from their early years, to adulthood, to causes which led to their involvement in piracy, and their eventual capture and fate. And deep dives into those who hunted down the pirates in Rhode Island during the Golden Age of Piracy.
With a Foreword by Robert A. Geake, public historian and the author of fifteen books on Rhode Island and New England history.
