Depression is the absence of the will to live. It is being alive on the outside but broken on the inside, as if we had just experienced the greatest heartbreak in the world, even though it may not have actually occurred.
Our mind desperately seeks an explanation for this senseless state and clings to the most implausible reasons to justify what it feels, even when no reasons exist, in a desperate attempt to avoid descending into madness.
Depression drains every last drop of life from us. To the point where the afflicted, in a logical attempt to reconcile their feelings with reality, unable to endure such overwhelming pain any longer—and even overcoming the powerful instinct of survival, the one that ensures the continuation of the species—sometimes ends up surrendering to the cold embrace of suicide.
Depression, like an epidemic (perhaps it is one), spreads relentlessly, especially in developed countries. In Spain, it affects two and a half million people.
However, depression can be cured. This is its encouraging miracle: it is possible to bury this terrible illness and overcome it before it takes us down with it.
